Why does your gin and tonic glow blue in ultraviolet light?

The reason for this lies within the tonic water.  Tonic water will fluoresce under ultraviolet light (UV light) because of the presence of quinine.  The sensitivity of quinine to UV light is such that it can appear visibly fluorescent in direct sunlight.  Some say that the reason we find things that glow under UV light fascinating is because we cannot see the UV light they absorb but can see the visible light they emit. When was the process of carbonation invented?

In 1783, in Geneva and after 10 years of experimenting, Jacob Schweppe invented the first industrial process to capture and bottle bubbles, the process of carbonation.  This invention of soda water was an immediate success and was endorsed by leading doctors and sold as a treatment for a variety of ailments. Gin Tasting for Nick's 30th Birthday in Wiltshire

The Ice and a Slice team were invited to Wiltshire this weekend to hold an informal Gin Tasting for Nick's 30th Birthday.  Lauren had arranged a fabulous celebration weekend away at the Barn Farmhouse for the group of 17.  We arrived at 2pm and having familiarised ourselves with the venue got straight into setting up for the tasting.  6 bottles of craft gins, chosen by Lauren, were lined up on the bar, the table was set with 4 tonics and mixers, garnishes, ice buckets, botanicals and glasses.  Lauren and her friends had also prepared a delicious spread of antipasti for the group...
